Thursday August 7, 2008 Forum to focus on sustaining growth HANOI: Finance, infrastructure and human resources will be the themes of the second annual Vietnam Economic Forum to be held here on Sept 19 and 20 and attended by 400 regional business delegates and policymakers. The event at the Hanoi Horison Hotel is co-organised by Vietnam’s Planning and Investment Ministry, Vietnam News and Asia News Network, an alliance of 19 newspapers in 17 Asian countries. The forum’s focus this year is on “sustaining growth” in view of the increasing volatility in the global economy propelled by the US sub-prime crisis and the unprecedented rise in fuel price. Despite being one of the star performers, the Vietnamese economy is also not immune to the global volatility. The economic management focus of late has been on containing inflation and to work on sustaining economic growth in the long term. “The conference is timely. We hope many of the speakers who are experts in their fields can share views and ideas on how Vietnam and the Asian region can move forward productively and with stability,” said Tran Mai Huong, editor-in-chief of Vietnam News. Among the speakers from Vietnam are Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Deputy Prime Minister and Education and Training Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan, Planning and Investment Minister Vo Hong Phuc, Finance Minister Vu Van Ninh, and Transport Minister Ho Nghia Dung. International speakers include Dr Supachai Panichpakdi, UNCTD secretary-general; Robert Morse, Citibank Asia CEO; Tran Bac Ha, CEO Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam; Kan Trakulhoon, president and CEO of Siam Cement Group Thailand; Dr Jorg Schneppendahl, CEO Siemens Railway Infrastructure Turnkey Business, Germany; William Lean, MD of Infrastructure Fund, Vina Capital. Among other participants of the forum are business leaders and officials from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia and China.
